OpenID Federation 1.0 -
A federation can be expressed as an agreement between parties that trust each other. In bilateral federations, direct trust can be established between two organizations belonging to the same federation. In a multilateral federation, bilateral agreements might not be practical, in which case, trust can be mediated by a third party. That is the model used in this specification. - openid.net/specs/openid-federa

@nelson Good to know. I have no intention in building one, I just would like to be able to find my people and be found by my people. I think people also have a lot of pre-conceived notions about search that also shut down discussion. I never mentioned crawling, cross-instances, unsolicited scraping, or public anything--just asking how could you deliver a sustainable search. Guess I am foolish.

@JesseSkinner People create entire new frameworks, libraries, and standards over having to learn SQL.

@nelson @tmcw seems like it would have to be triggered opt-in on a per instance and per user level -- not a crawler. Just enabled search. My questions is how is it sustained? Ads? Subscription (opt-in)? Other?

@tmcw If someone was to spider Mastodon instance, cache, and dial in a search--what would some possible ways to make money to sustain it? Ads? What else?
